PROCESSING OF BIOMASS & MANUFACTURE OF BIOFUELS
As is the case with fossil fuel power plants, biomass power plants combust a feedstock to generate electricity. Thus, biomass plants raise similar, if not identical, concerns about air emissions and water use as fossil fuel plants. However, there is one major difference and that is biomass feedstock can be produced sustainably whereas fossil fuels are not renewable. Sources of biomass are diverse, including energy crops (e.g. switchgrass), agricultural waste, manure, forest products, waste, and urban waste.
Biomass can also be used to produce biofuels directly, for example, in the manufacture of biomethane and other biofuels. However, some methane slip can occur during this process and this can be treated using LTB OxiTHERM thermal oxidiser technology.
